The U-21 league for Category One clubs, called Premier League 2, is structured similarly to the Premiership and Championship leagues, but with one key difference: no teams are relegated.
Starting from the 2023 season, all 26 Category 1 academies compete in a single unified league.
The season includes 20 match weeks, with each team playing 20 regular season matches.
Teams play against each club within their seeding pot once and compete against three to five teams from other pots, either at home or away.
Results determine the ranking of the 26 teams, with three points awarded for a win and one point for a draw.
After the regular season, the top 16 teams enter a single-elimination playoff, with matchups based on league standings.
For example, the 1st place team faces the 16th place team, and the higher-seeded team has the advantage of playing at home.
The U21 new structure allows teams to include five over-aged players in a match day squad.
