Charlton Athletic Academy

Charlton Athletic FC runs a category 2 academy based in London. They have an elite youth development program that nurtures young talent.

Some of the Academy’s Under-21 home matches take place at Dartford FC’s grounds, Princes Park Stadium

Academy Competitions

Each season, the Academy competes across the standard slate of competitions for Category Two clubs:

• U17 Premier League Cup – introduced by the Premier League in 2017 (originally as the U16 Premier League Cup, renamed the U17 Premier League Cup in 2020); seven group winners plus the best runner-up (by points, goal difference, then head-to-head) progress to the quarter-finals.
• U18 Professional Development League – a leading English youth competition for Category Two academies, comprising 20 teams split into North and South regional divisions, combining league competition with a national play-off system.
• U18 Professional Development League Cup – established for the 2021/22 season, featuring 32 teams divided into eight groups of four, with group winners advancing to the knockout stages.
• FA Youth Cup – the traditional nationwide knockout competition open to academy sides across English football.
• Professional Development League 2 – England’s main Under-21 youth competition for Category Two academies, sitting just below Premier League 2. It is split into regional North and South divisions, with play-offs determining the national champion.
• U21 Premier League Cup – introduced in the 2013/14 season to add a knockout tournament alongside the regular Professional Development Phase league schedule, featuring nine groups with the top team in each group plus the seven best runners-up advancing to the knockout stage.
• London Senior Cup – a county knockout competition contested by Charlton Athletic’s Academy alongside senior and academy sides from across London.
• Kent Senior Cup – a county knockout competition contested by Charlton Athletic’s Academy alongside senior and academy sides from across Kent.
• Bristol Street Motors Trophy (EFL Trophy) – a midweek knockout competition featuring EFL League One and League Two clubs alongside invited Category One and Two academy sides.

2025/26 Tournament Groupings

In the U17 Premier League Cup, Charlton’s Under-17s were drawn in Group D against Under-17 sides from Brighton, Chelsea and Southampton.

For the U18 Professional Development League Cup, the Under-18s were drawn in Group C against AFC Wimbledon, Gillingham and Millwall, with fixtures scheduled for 26 August, 4 October and 22 November 2025.

In the FA Youth Cup, the Under-18s were drawn away against Liverpool in the third round proper, away against Watford in the fourth round proper, and away against Burnley in the fifth round.

Also in the U21 Premier League Cup, Charlton’s Under-21s were drawn in Group C against Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Preston North End, before being drawn against Watford in the round of 16.

In the Kent Senior Cup quarter-final, the Under-21s were drawn away against Maidstone United.

Season Timeline

July 2025

• Talented striker Micah Mbick signed a new deal with the club until 2028, with a one-year club option.
• Miles Leaburn signed a new three-year deal with Charlton Athletic.
• Nathan Asiimwe signed a new contract running until 2027, with a one-year club option, and joined AFC Wimbledon on a season-long loan.

August 2025

• Defenders Toby Bower and Ollie Hobden both extended their contracts with the Addicks. Ty Ewens-Findlay from Cambridge United, former Arsenal player Max Kuczynski, and Paris Lock from AFC Wimbledon all signed with Charlton Athletic’s Under-21 squad. Academy players Ethan Brown, Reuben Reid, Jacob Safa, and Manu Wales all signed their first professional contracts with the club.
• 16-year-old defender Reuben Gokah departed Charlton Athletic to continue his development with Everton’s Academy.

September 2025

• An in-depth interview with Academy Manager Tom Pell was released to mark EFL Youth Development week.
• Karoy Anderson signed a new deal with the club until 2028; a product of the Addicks’ academy since age eight, the midfielder scored on his senior debut in November 2022 and has since made 78 appearances, including 46 in the previous season’s promotion campaign.
• Charlton added 18-year-old goalkeeper George Hardy to their academy ranks, who previously came through the Wolves Academy.
• Academy prospect Henry Rylah committed his future to the club, signing a contract until 2027, with the club holding an option for a further year.

October 2025

• Miles Leaburn’s second-half appearance against Preston North End marked his 100th appearance in all competitions for Charlton Athletic; teammate Tyreece Campbell had reached the same milestone in January, and had made 133 appearances.
• Charlton Athletic’s Under-18 side forfeited their match against Sporting Hackney FC, resulting in their elimination from the London Senior Cup.

November 2025

• Alan Mwamba signed a new long-term contract.
• Keenan Gough was named in the matchday squad for the first time in the EFL Championship fixture between Charlton Athletic and West Bromwich Albion.
• 14-year-old centre-back Levi Rufus departed Charlton Athletic to join Aston Villa, where he will be part of their Under-16 squad.
• Charlton Athletic young forward Micah Mbick received a call-up to the England U20 squad ahead of their upcoming match against Japan at Doncaster Rovers.
• The young Addicks exited the London Senior Cup, following their tie away to Hanwell Town.
• Charlton Under-21 captain Keenan Gough signed a new long-term contract with the club.
• Charlton Athletic Academy graduate Micah Mbick was named the Sky Bet League Two Goal of the Month winner for October.

December 2025

• Charlton’s Under-18s booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup, following their tie against Liverpool, setting up a tie against the winner of Watford or Plymouth Argyle.
• Charlton Athletic’s Under-18s were set to travel to Vicarage Road to face Watford in their fourth-round tie on Thursday 8 January, with kick-off scheduled for 7pm.

January 2026

• Zach Mitchell was recalled from his loan spell at Hibernian FC; the 21-year-old defender had joined the Scottish Premiership side in September 2025 and made two senior appearances during his time in Edinburgh.
• Greg Miller was set to be appointed Charlton Athletic’s new Academy Manager, taking up the role in March after completing his notice period at Portsmouth, where he had held the same position since 2021.

February 2026

• Charlton Athletic’s Under-18s’ FA Youth Cup journey came to an end in the fifth round, following their tie away to Burnley’s Under-18s.
• Sam Washington-Amoah signed his first professional contract with the club; the midfielder joined the Addicks’ academy at Under-15 level and has impressed this season under Jason Pearce at Charlton Athletic.

2024/25 Season

The Charlton Athletic Academy enjoyed a proud 2024/25 season, with the Under-16s reaching the final of the Premier League Professional Development League Cup and the Under-17s reaching the final of the Premier League Cup.

The Under-21s also enjoyed a strong campaign, reaching the quarter-finals of the Premier League Cup.

In the U17 Premier League Cup, Charlton’s Under-17s were drawn in Group A against Chelsea, Arsenal and Fulham, before progressing through the quarter-finals against Southampton and the semi-finals against Manchester United, to the final against Tottenham Hotspur.

In the U18 Professional Development League Cup, the Under-18s were drawn in Group E against Stevenage, Colchester and QPR.

For the U21 Premier League Cup, Charlton Athletic were drawn in Group H against Stockport County, Leeds United and Birmingham City, before progressing through the round of 16 against Blackburn to the quarter-finals against Southampton.

In the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, the Addicks advanced into the last 32, following their tie against Chelsea’s Under-21s at the Valley.

September 2024

• Steve Avory stepped down as Academy Director after nearly 25 years.
• Former England youth international goalkeeper Tommy Reid joined Charlton’s Under-21s after leaving Brighton and Hove Albion.

October 2024

• In the first round of the FA Youth Cup, Charlton Athletic were drawn away to Gillingham.
• Charlton Athletic’s FA Youth Cup journey came to an end after a first-round tie away at Gillingham.
• The Addicks advanced into the last 32 of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, following their tie against Chelsea’s Under-21s at the Valley.

November 2024

• Thierry Small was called up to England’s Elite League squad for November’s internationals.

December 2024

• Academy graduate Karoy Anderson reached 50 appearances for Charlton Athletic.

January 2025

• Aaron Henry was recalled from his loan spell at Rochdale, where he had made 16 appearances; he had suffered a broken foot in November.
• Miles Leaburn was named the EA Sports FC EFL Young Player of the Month for December, having tallied four goals and two assists during the month.

March 2025

• Charlton’s Under-21s were set to face Southampton away in the Premier League Cup quarter-finals, with the match set for Saturday 29 March, at Staplewood Campus, kicking off at 2pm.
• Charlton’s Under-21s’ Premier League Cup journey ended in the quarter-finals, following their tie away to Southampton.

April 2025

• The Charlton Under-17s were narrowly defeated by Tottenham Hotspur in a thrilling Premier League Cup final held at the Lamex Stadium; Manu Wales scored twice for the young Addicks in the hard-fought contest.
• Academy standout Ibrahim Fullah committed his future to the club by signing a new long-term deal, following his first professional contract in April 2024.
• Charlton’s Under-16s were defeated by Watford’s Under-16s in the final of the Premier League U16 Professional Development League Cup, with the match taking place away at Vicarage Road.

May 2025

• Tyreece Campbell was named the 2024/25 season Valley Gold Young Player of the Year.
• Nathan Asiimwe, currently on loan at Walsall, played a key role in helping the team reach the EFL League Two play-off final following the second leg of their semi-final against Chesterfield.
